I love cold calling. When you ask the class a question, you don’t pick students with their hands up to answer. Instead, you randomly pick students to answer. This way you better understand how the class is going overall. I personally find that it leads to higher engagement and attention levels.
To make cold calling more fun and more visually attractive, I have created PowerPoint slides that randomly select a student to call on. You can download the file and add your own students’ names. You can also modify the slides so that they are vocabulary that you want students to practise for a topic or you can replace the words on each slide with diagrams and graphics for revision. The possibilities are endless!
